World Championships 2005

''Brazil, we love you!'' All freestyleskaters agreed this was one of the best freestyle contests ever. A large freestylearea with a perfect surface and another exactly the same for training and warming up during the contest. A sound system that would had fit any rock concert. A wonderful crowd that was all but silent. Media on site filming and doing interviews. Freestyle has once again proved to have the power to be a stand alone event, and not a side attraction.

Pro's

Top three pro's: 3rd Per Cangaru (left), 2nd Stefan "Lillis" Åkesson (middle), 1st Günter Mokylus (right).

The skating was on the highest level and without no doubt Brazil is the leading country in freestyle with many great and talented freestylers. They have a strong freestyle scene with both pro and am divisions. Sao Paulo has the most freestylers and may without no doubt be considered ''The World Capital of Freestyle Skateboarding''. This years World Championships was even sponsored by the city of Sao Paulo. The Brazilians took well care of us surprised freestylers that had no idea freestyle was this big. We also finally got to know the famous Japanese.

Freestyle has now taken another step forward and the Brazilians have secured the future of freestyle with a new strong generation of freestylers.

Am's

Top three am's: 3rd Rodrigo Texaco (left), 2nd Rodrigo Jackass (right), 1st Thiago Bones (middle).

As I competed myself I can not remember everyone's runs and describe what tricks where done, the different styles and directions, tricks landed and so forth. The nature of a contest this big makes me forgot my own skating... We all have to wait for the vidoeclips and DVD's.

Monday after the contest everyone but me seemed to relax from skating. The weather was getting cold in Sweden, but this monday in Brazil was hot and nice and Paulo Folha that I stayed with took me to the Villlalobos park as I had to skate in the warm weather.

Most freestylers in Sao Paolo, and they are many, more than one can imagine, skate at the Ibira Puera park on weekends and sometimes on weekdays, but it was too far for me to go. Luckily the Germans showed up, but YoYo was with Guenter to film for the national TV (which however got cancelled as it was live and Guenters english was not up to par). To my disappointment the Germans had no boards with them! We then went to see Sao Paulo from a mountain and it was a really nice view.

The next day our Brazilian skateboarding friends took me and the German team to the beach. It was a really nice and relaxing day at the beach, and then we cruised around in the cars looking at other beaches, and also got stuck in a carchase with police that had the gun ready to shoot. It felt like we were in a movie, and it was a bit scary.

Of course we had to skate so went to this indoor skatepark. In Sweden they build indoor skateparks to protect from the cold, in Brazil they build indoor skateparks to protect from the heat. It was however a very warm skatepark this evening, but that did not stop us freestylers from skating the pools, banks and the flatland area. At the end of the evening the session turned into a intense freestyle session.

My trip ended in a very nice way. Paulo drove me to the airport and we were going to say hi to his brother (inventor of some crazy 50/50 tricks I had only heard about but finally got to see) that work at the flight control tower. They had a surprise to me: a guided tour up the tower! I got to see all the computers and monitors, it was like a kids dream come true.

This was my first vist to Brazil but it will not be my last one.
