WFSA Talent Fund
To stimulate freestyle skateboard talents to join international contests, the WFSA has started a talent fund. If the candidate is approved, then she/he can receive money to cover some travel costs and thus visit a certain large contest (with WFSA approved status)!
Candidates should be at the beginning of their freestyle skateboarding career, independent of their actual age.

On 25th January, WFSA Treasurer and founder Bob Staton passed away at age 67. He was probably the oldest freestyler that still skated. We will all miss him and our thoughts are with his family. More: see below.
Starting from this month, I include Dream Flatland Tricks.
These are tricks that I haven't seen in videos and real life yet, so they may inspire the most talented skaters. The 2 next years I try to put 2 new ones in each monthly mailing.
This mailinglist now contains almost 900 e-mails from freestylers, even from countries like Australia, Brunei, Egypt, Estonia, Indonesia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Philippines, Russia, Samoa, South Africa, Ukraine and Viet Nam...

On 25th January Bob Staton, founder of the WFSA (2001) and at age 67 probably the oldest freestyler (and slalom skater, and high jumper) that still skated, passed away.
We will all miss him and our thoughts are with his family.

Go Skateboarding Day (GSD) is an unofficial annual holiday conceived by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) to promote skateboarding. This international event began in 2004. Each year the holiday grows bigger and better than last. Skateboard parks, skateboard shops, cities and skateboarders plan events such as barbeques, fundraisers, contests, or simply took to the streets. It is usually marked on 21st June and especially popular in Russia.

Please note the attachment, which shows the inventor of many tricks in the seventies, Jim McCall.
Jim perhaps invented the flatground ollie (early 80's), but surely the 1-handed handstand (1976!), handstand tic-tacking (1976!), etc.
McCall was also a hero TO Rodney Mullen, who rode McCall's pro freestyle model deck from 1977 thru the middle of 1980.
Jim's freestyle model by Walker was probably the first production board ever to straighten the sides to near parallel. Jim and teammate Rodney Mullen preferred the basic straight-sided design for rail tricks over the more rounded sides that were common until then.

FSU 2011 Video Contest (extended)
Create a 90-120 second skate video with the words Freestylers United somewhere in your video, no editing text into your video. It can be a sticker, made out of leaves, sand, spray painted on your board, with a permanent marker, the creativity is endless. There's a catch. You have to include a 30 second or more audio on why you love to freestyle. It can be a sentence or two, you can say it into the camera or add your own audio.

Jim's freestyle model by Walker was probably the first production board ever to straighten the sides to near parallel. Jim and teammate Rodney Mullen preferred the basic straight-sided design for rail tricks over the more rounded sides that were common until then.

FSU 2011 Video Contest (extended)
Create a 90-120 second skate video with the words Freestylers United somewhere in your video, no editing text into your video. It can be a sticker, made out of leaves, sand, spray painted on your board, with a permanent marker, the creativity is endless. There's a catch. You have to include a 30 second or more audio on why you love to freestyle. It can be a sentence or two, you can say it into the camera or add your own audio.

Students Learn Science Through Skateboard Demonstration
Students at Presa Elementary (El Paso, Texas, USA) learned the importance of science and math in real life situations. Freestyler Dr. Bill Robertson presented the action science skateboard demonstration at the school on 23rd March 2011. The students were taught how to use science and math concurrently in every day activities.

Japan Benefit
The earthquake in Japan and its consequences leave no one untouched.
The "5th District Skateboard Co." wants to contribute and offer some help to the victims of the disaster in Japan through the sale of a special deck with a Japan background.
All proceeds will be donated to the Swiss "Glückskette" fundraising organisation.
Note from the WFSA: other freestyle initiatives on Japan are welcome!

Dear Freestyle Skateboarder,
The registration for the World Freestyle Championships in Malmö, Sweden is now open!
Due to the death of WFSA founder Bob Staton, and the development of completely new sorts of freestyle tricks (which use street elements), some WFSA Statutes changes became necessary.
The past months the 7 members of the WFSA Executive Board and the 14 members of the WFSA Board of Directors were able to discuss and vote upon 8 proposals.
Below are two of the accepted results.
1) “Freestyle Skateboarding” will be defined as:
Flatland Freestyle skateboarding on a flat area with no obstacles.
This of course does NOT limit event organizers, only the definition of our sport and the area in which the WFSA is active.
2) "World Ranking System"
This has to be developed by a special working group (SWG), suggested by Bob Staton and now continued by Hans Lucas. You can join this development/discussion via a reply to this post or a PM.
The objective is to arrange an annual (or bi-annual?) ranking system via points at large contests. Additionally, we could add a country ranking system.
To become effective and start with this task, this SWG must first contain 3 to 5 freestylers with a combined freestyle experience of at least 50 years.

Russ Howell began skating in 1958 at the age of nine. He was known for his gymnastic moves (including handstand jumps, and three-finger handstands). However, he is best remembered for his incredible spinning ability. Russ Howell can spin 360's for a long, long time. His personal best is 163, a world record.

Dear Freestyle Skateboarder,
The registration for the World Freestyle Championships in Malmö, Sweden is now open!
Due to the death of WFSA founder Bob Staton, and the development of completely new sorts of freestyle tricks (which use street elements), some WFSA Statutes changes became necessary.
The past months the 7 members of the WFSA Executive Board and the 14 members of the WFSA Board of Directors were able to discuss and vote upon 8 proposals.
Below are two of the accepted results.
1) “Freestyle Skateboarding” will be defined as:
Flatland Freestyle skateboarding on a flat area with no obstacles.
This of course does NOT limit event organizers, only the definition of our sport and the area in which the WFSA is active.
2) "World Ranking System"
This has to be developed by a special working group (SWG), suggested by Bob Staton and now continued by Hans Lucas. You can join this development/discussion via a reply to this post or a PM.
The objective is to arrange an annual (or bi-annual?) ranking system via points at large contests. Additionally, we could add a country ranking system.
To become effective and start with this task, this SWG must first contain 3 to 5 freestylers with a combined freestyle experience of at least 50 years.

About 500 Hanks High School students, mostly ninth graders, took in the May 17 act that combined X-Games acrobatics with principles of algebra and geometry fused by Bill Robertson, Ph.D., associate professor of teacher education and associate dean in the College of Education at The University of Texas at El Paso."

"Skatepark Mathematics, the latest effort to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among high school students.
About 500 Hanks High School students, mostly ninth graders, took in the May 17 act that combined X-Games acrobatics with principles of algebra and geometry fused by Bill Robertson, Ph.D., associate professor of teacher education and associate dean in the College of Education at The University of Texas at El Paso."
Professor Robertson is also an active freestyle skateboarder!

Below is the latest news that may be of interest to you.
This edition contains a Rodney Mullen special, part 1.
In 1980, a young boy in full protective gear surprised everyone by skating at a contest in the Oceanside roller skating arena (San Diego), and beating the best freestylers by tricks that hardly anyone had seen before. A legend was born, and after that contest Rodney Mullens name rolled through the freestyle scene, especially because he was the inventor of so many tricks like the flatland ollie. Mullens runs were spiced up by making eye contact - I think that impresses the novice public more than the hardest tricks. Later Mullens secret came out: he used to skate every day, hours before he went to school and hours after school, in his father's garage.
Up until this day, almost every promising skater that shows up on Youtube is compared with him.

On June 21, Skateistan Afghan Skate School has organized its 3rd annual Go Skateboarding Day Kabul. Location: Skateistan skatepark, near the Ghazi stadium. This year 180 kids took part, and some participants celebrated the day by wearing traditional clothing while presenting the Afghan skate scene to the world. Both Afghan and international media have covered the event in detail.
9)5th Annual Oroville Go Skate Day was Saturday June 25th 2011 at the Bedrock Skate and Bike Park in Oroville, California It included a kickflip challenge (most kickflips in a row won!) and a best trick contest winner take all $1000.00.

Millions of Skateboarders Worldwide Hit the Streets for Go Skateboarding Day 2011
This year around 21st June, 5 Go Skateboarding Day events were held in Latin America, and events were even held in Cambodia and in Afghanistan!
Skateboarding is truly universal.

On June 21, Skateistan Afghan Skate School has organized its 3rd annual Go Skateboarding Day Kabul. Location: Skateistan skatepark, near the Ghazi stadium. This year 180 kids took part, and some participants celebrated the day by wearing traditional clothing while presenting the Afghan skate scene to the world. Both Afghan and international media have covered the event in detail.
9)5th Annual Oroville Go Skate Day was Saturday June 25th 2011 at the Bedrock Skate and Bike Park in Oroville, California It included a kickflip challenge (most kickflips in a row won!) and a best trick contest winner take all $1000.00.

July was a very busy month with more than 5 freestyle contests and events. So send in your (links to) reports, videos and photos of these events.
You probably already know, but on 27th July 2012 the Summer Olympics in London start, with possibly some freestyle side-events. Think about how many sport fanatics and sports networks want to watch and film YOUR skills on the sidewalks of London!
At this time, event organizers already start with the preparation of their 2012 events by contacting potential sponsors. So when will YOU take action?
If you want to organize an event, make a web page (like on the World Freestyle Skateboard Association forum, or on Facebook), see if others are interested, and send your link to publish your event.

Like each year, the WFSA now also starts to invite experienced event organizers for their 2012 plans.
If you wonder about picking which date, then please note the annual
events that may take place around the same dates. See below for already planned freestyle events in 2012.
Also, please note that the US and Europe had/have a World Championship in 2010 and 2011, so other continents are especially invited to aim for the World Championship 2012.
Due to insurance issues, the WFSA will not sanction an event, but instead offer help and sponsoring where needed.
Please let us know before 1st December 2011.
It is also possible to plan your event as a backup location to the
World Championship 2012.

10 Freestylers showed the visitors at this annual extreme "relentless" sports festival that British freestyle is very much alive and kicking.

10 Freestylers showed the visitors at this annual extreme "relentless" sports festival that British freestyle is very much alive and kicking.
With swag from Death Skates (decks, shirts) and £250 prize money 10 very talented skaters showed what they could do in freestyle and best trick.

Below is the latest news that may be of interest to you.
Last month I welcomed the famous freestyler Russ Howell as a new member of the [WFSA] Freestyle News mailinglist community. Russ has won numerous contests, and I consider Russ to be one of the godfathers of freestyle because he began skateboarding already in 1958. In the December 2011 issue of the [WFSA] Freestyle News mailing, one of his achievements will be mentioned in a special on freestyle/flatland skateboard World Records.

It’s the tip of your skateboard where an ollie begins. The nose or tail of the deck and the point where the energy from the impact and interaction between the tip and the riding surface enters your deck, create the energy you need for many ollie tricks.
The P-Tip is designed and engineered to maximize the decks pop performance regardless of terrain.
What is a "P-Tip"?
P-Tip is invented by the company Performance Tip Technology.
These are in fact plastic extensions that should be adjusted to the nose and/or tail of the skateboard deck. They are not tailbones or nosebones; P-Tips are worked in the wood. When you have worn your P-Tip then you can turn it 180' and you have a new tail!

31st December 2011 my term as WFSA Secretary is ending. This is why the WFSA starts an election round for this function.
The first step is to look for candidates that are fit and motivated to fill this function from 2012 until 2015. So if you are interested, please keep reading.
Who may apply for this function?
Any WFSA Board Member or Executive Board Member
OR
Anyone who:
-is willing and able to become a WFSA Board Member
AND
-is willing and able to become a WFSA Secretary
AND
-supports the goals of the WFSA
AND
-is accepted by the WFSA board to become a member.
How to apply/nominate, responsibilities, tasks, details
Make sure that you apply before 1st December 2011.
What if no-one is interested?
In that case no election round is required.
I am willing and able to continue this position for 4 more years.

Pierre-André Senizergues' New House
French Former Pro Freestyler Pierre-André Senizergues, founder of Etnies and owner of Sole Technology and many other companies, incorporates gaps, ramps and rails to his new home in Malibu, California.
All components of the house can be used as barriers, from the couch to the freezer. Walls become quarterpipes, including gaps, handrails and stairs. Moreover, all edges of furniture and obstacles are protected by coping. The furniture that makes up the house was all created by the Skate Study House. Pierre-André is one of the persons behind the Skate Study House.
Skate Study House produces innovative designs inspired by the skateboard.
The video shows a prototype of the house, which is yet to be built. A full-scale mockup of the living area debuted in July at an exhibition on skateboarding culture in Paris, where the Etnies Pro Team tested it out.
Perhaps "streetstyle" should from now on be called "homestyle"?

"P-Tip" - How to protect your deck from ollie wear and tear
It’s the tip of your skateboard where an ollie begins. The nose or tail of the deck and the point where the energy from the impact and interaction between the tip and the riding surface enters your deck, create the energy you need for many ollie tricks.
The P-Tip is designed and engineered to maximize the decks pop performance regardless of terrain.
What is a "P-Tip"?
P-Tip is invented by the company Performance Tip Technology.
These are in fact plastic extensions that should be adjusted to the nose and/or tail of the skateboard deck. They are not tailbones or nosebones; P-Tips are worked in the wood. When you have worn your P-Tip then you can turn it 180' and you have a new tail!

News from the WFSA: Secretary 2012-2015
31st December 2011 my term as WFSA Secretary is ending. This is why the WFSA starts an election round for this function.
The first step is to look for candidates that are fit and motivated to fill this function from 2012 until 2015. So if you are interested, please keep reading.
Who may apply for this function?
Any WFSA Board Member or Executive Board Member
OR
Anyone who:
-is willing and able to become a WFSA Board Member
AND
-is willing and able to become a WFSA Secretary
AND
-supports the goals of the WFSA
AND
-is accepted by the WFSA board to become a member.
How to apply/nominate, responsibilities, tasks, details
Make sure that you apply before 1st December 2011.
What if no-one is interested?
In that case no election round is required.
I am willing and able to continue this position for 4 more years.

Pierre-André Senizergues' New House
French Former Pro Freestyler Pierre-André Senizergues, founder of Etnies and owner of Sole Technology and many other companies, incorporates gaps, ramps and rails to his new home in Malibu, California.
All components of the house can be used as barriers, from the couch to the freezer. Walls become quarterpipes, including gaps, handrails and stairs. Moreover, all edges of furniture and obstacles are protected by coping. The furniture that makes up the house was all created by the Skate Study House. Pierre-André is one of the persons behind the Skate Study House.
Skate Study House produces innovative designs inspired by the skateboard.
The video shows a prototype of the house, which is yet to be built. A full-scale mockup of the living area debuted in July at an exhibition on skateboarding culture in Paris, where the Etnies Pro Team tested it out.
Perhaps "streetstyle" should from now on be called "homestyle"?
